Originally from India, it is a common fruit throughout Brazil, since it grows better in hot or temperate climates. There are several varieties such as Santa Bárbara, Valencia, and others. In general, the pulp is red and contains many seeds; however we have a variety known as Japanese or katama watermelon, which has a yellow pulp.
In general, the watermelon is consumed
fresh since it is refreshing, especially in the summer. In nutritional terms,
the watermelon is ideal for diets, since it is a low calory fruit. It constitutes
about 90% water and 10% nutrients.
