Southeast Asian in origin. The Arabs had spread the cultivation of the citric fruits through the Mediterranean and Europe, and with the Spanish and Portuguese, the fruits arrived in the Americas. In the tangerine plantations of Brazil, the predominant varieties are Murcote, Ponkan and Cravo.
It is a fruit which is consumed fresh mainly, but we also
find it in the form of juice, desserts, ice cream, etc. Nutritionally , the
tangerine is rich in staple fibers; however, it contains a lesser concentration
of vitamin C in relation to the orange.
