Brought from northeastern Brazil by the Portuguese it has adapted well in Africa and India. In Brazil we find more than one hundred species of passion fruit plants,; it is classified as ornamental due to the beauty of the flowers, and is mostly known for its edible fruit.
Among
its several species, we find the bitter or yellow passion fruit, the sweet
and the purple varieties. It is mainly used for the production of juice ,
but we also find passion fruit candies, jellies, ice cream and liqueurs. Nutritionally,
passion fruit is low in calories, but is best known for containing a natural
tranquilizer, passiflorin.
