This tropical fruit is of South American origin .The fruit was propagated by the Portuguese who took the papaya plant found in Brazil to other countries of Africa and Asia. According to historians, the fruit gained the name of papaya because of a certain similarity with the breast of a woman.
The most widely consumed varieties are the “Formosa”
and the “Papaia”, which is the most common variety world wide.
The fruit is used in compotes, candies, purees, ice cream and in other ways.
In nutritional terms, the papaya has importance as a low calory fruit, containing
dietary fibers, potassium, vitamin C, and the papain enzyme, which helps in
protein digestion.
