Originally from Africa or Central Asia. This fruit has only become popular in Brazil in the last 50 years, being found in the Northeast where there are good cultivation conditions. Today the region of Mossoró (RN) is the main producing area of melon.
The main
cultivated varieties of cantaloup are: Yellow, Valenciano, Cantalupe, Net
Melon. It is mainly consumed fresh, but we also find it in juices, ice cream,
candies, etc. In nutritional terms, the melon is a low-calory fruit with more
than 90% of water and containing good amount of vitamin C. The melon with
the orange colour pulp has more beta-.carotene than the melon with the white
colour.
