Originally fruits from southeastern Asia, the cultivation of citric fruits was spread by the Arabs through the Mediterranean and Europe and thence to America by the Spanish and Portuguese. The Lemon itself in fact only exists as the Siciliano variety. Other types that we know, such as Taiti, Gallego and Cravo are in fact varieties of sweet lime produced by grafting.
The lemon is very widely used in the Brazilian cuisine, either
in dressings or as juice, for ice cream, candies, drinks, etc. The extracted
oil of the peel is quite widely used in the industry of aromas and essences.
Nutritionally, the lemon is rich in citric acid and vitamin C, and prevents
scurvy.
