Originating in the Pacific archipelagoes, it was brought by the Portuguese to India, Africa and Brazil. All parts of the coconut can be used: the shell can be used for handicrafts, the pulp or 'meat', as it is called, is used in various ways in Brazilian cooking, for making sweets or savouries, for example, and there's also the coconut water we all know and drink.
From a nutritional point of view, the pulp or meat of the coconut is high in fat content, and the water contains high levels of potassium.
