It originates from the Antilles and is called the Barbados Cherry. It is known world wide for its high vitamin C content, and is thus also used widely in the cosmetic and drug industries.
In Brazil, much of the production is destined for the industrial preparation of purees, juices, candies, ice cream, etc. In nutritional terms, besides being a great source of vitamin C, fiber and potassium, acerola is also low in calories.
