The apple is thought be one of the oldest fruits known to civilization, since there are reports of its existence dating back more than 25,000 years. Its origin is not known for certain, but apparently it first occurred in Central Asia. In Brazil, the apple tree was brought by the Italian and German immigrants, and it was cultivated in the South of the country, which had a favorable climate.
During the harvest period, the Brazilian plantations supply the internal market, and it is also exported to several countries. The most commonly planted varieties in Brazil are Gala, Fuji and Golden Delicious; however we also find the Red Delicious and Granny Smith varieties in the market toom.
The apple
is consumed as a fresh fruit, or as juice and in desserts. Nutritionally,
the apple is an excellent fruit for maintaining fitness and keeping in good
form as it is low in calories and contains dietary fibers in the skin.
