This is a typical palm from the North of Brazil. The fruit is somewhat similar to the jabuticaba, being round with a dark skin, though the assai fruit is smaller in size. Today assai fruit is widely consumed in all the regions of the country, since it is energy giving and very nutritional.
Its puree is consumed straight or mixed with fruits and cereals in the form of ice cream, juice, served in bowls, etc. Nutritionally, the fruit is rich in carbohydrates and fats, and has a high concentration of iron and calcium, which makes it comparable to milk. It is for this reason that in some parts of the North it substitutes milk in childrens' daily diet.
